Staten Island bungalow bungle: Users booted for park; land went to HBO
For the first time in 100 years, a group of bungalows on Staten Island's Cedar Grove Beach sit vacant this summer.
The city booted residents of the 42 bungalows last year to make way for an upgraded beach and park project - but the evicted residents are angry that much of the land has instead been handed over to HBO crews to film "boardwalk empire dvd."
The beach is open to the public - the former residents insist they never blocked anyone from the beach - but the area around the cottages, including a baseball field once used by community groups and paths where people rode their bikes, is fenced off and is now off-limits.
"They're using it as a taxpayer-subsidized backlot," said David Young, 33, one of the evicted bungalow dwellers.
"They were lying to the public... that they were making it a public park and doing all these things, but then they turn around and give it to HBO."
Documents obtained by the former residents said the production company would pay at least $80,000 worth of "boardwalk empire box set" to use the site - less than the $134,000 in rent the residents paid for the summer.

that HBO’s fantasy-drama game of thrones box set features people getting impaled by swords. For those of you who’d rather not have known that, I apologize.
