Question: I just bought a Mac computer and have a bunch of old home videos on a dvd. Now I want to rip the DVD and get it into iMovie so I can edit pieces. Is that possible? What format and codec does the file need to be in?
Answer: DVD to iMovie Importing program is the best way to import homemade and protected DVD footage into iMovie with the least amount of generation loss. You can rip DVD to mp4, mov, mpg, dv, m4v, avc/h.264 video then import and modify it in iMovie.
Tutorial: How to get DVD to iMovie?
Download program and load DVD
Install DVD to iMovie program, launch it and load DVD movie from your DVD-ROM, you’ll see the DVD titles and chapters info listed on the program.
Set iMovie compatible video format
Find the target video format from the Profile menu, you can choose MPEG4 or DV as output format. MPEG4 will give you a smaller file and is slightly better in quality.
Rip DVD to MPEG-4
Hit Converter button, DVD to iMovie program will start ripping DVD to specific video format that you set. You can see the conversion process as below.
