iPhone very own credit card terminals
A brand new invention for the iPhone that is going to be a “must have” for shop-aholics and that is of course the ability to swipe their credit card through a reader on their iPhone to complete transactions. Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder and Jim McKelvey designed this ingenious gadget that plugs into the audio jack of the iPhone. Their name for this cool gadget is Square.
Oh, well, we cannot jump the gun and get our hands on this new device just yet but before long both buyer and seller will be able to add this device to their iPhone and be ready for a shopping spree.
The process: You will swipe your card through the slit on the Square; the device will read the credit card number and then send it to the iPhone via the audio jack once it has converted it into an audio signal. Inside the iPhone is software that will now decode this information or signal and send the transaction to Square’s servers where your purchase will be authenticated. Of course, all information prior to being sent will be encrypted.
Square Inc. is a bit different from other processors since this company has its own personal merchant account, which can be used by practically everyone. The concept is larger than you might expect as they are looking towards a user base, which is not only department stores, grocery stores, and restaurants, but going as far as to include internet buying from craigslist and eBay.
At this very moment, over 100 merchants are using this cool gadget, which is to be released during the first few months of 2010. Dorsey is optimistic that the Square will also be available for Android phone operating systems along with the iPhone.
