Dressing Like the Man, with the Men of Boardwalk Empire
EV: Talk to me about your characters on Boardwalk Empire. How do you feel about them, as men? What's your relationship with your character?the sopranos dvd set
MP: Yeah. You know, I respect him. He's coming back from the war. I think he's trying to do the right thing. I think he's really messed up from the war.
MKW: I love my character, Chalky White. I've learned a lot from him. I remember in the beginning, when we filmed, I was shocked that a black man was walking and talking the way Chalky was in 1920. I'll never forget Marty — you know, Scorsese — he was like, "Go right there. Do it. Be that man." That's who Chalky is. I'm proud of him. He has similarities to Omar [Little, Williams' character on The Wire] in certain kind of ways. I love what he represents for — I guess, I would say, my people. In a time and an era when racism really, really was rampant, you've got this black man who stands strong; He's respected, and that was rare in those days.the wire on dvd
EV: Talk to me about the style. What is it like to wear those historically-accurate clothes and try to perform in them?
MP: The first thing I do when I go to work is I get changed into my costume because it's like I can begin. It's a three-piece.
MKW: I've been told that Chalky is, not one of, but the best-dressed man on the show. So I've been told. What did you think about the red coat with the Persian fur?the sopranos dvd complete set
EV: The thing I love about Chalky is that it was actually a great allegory for his personality. He was taking all of the normal shapes you saw on a well-dressed gentleman and putting his own personality in it. He was showing off a little bit, you know?
