'Boardwalk Empire' wisely doesn't try to tell the entire story
Nucky Thompson (boardwalk empire dvd) has an unimpressive job title -- he's the treasurer of Atlantic City -- but everyone in town knows he's the Boss. As head of a patronage chain that extends its reach into every hiring decision and every pocket, he controls what goes on in the World's Playground, which is ideally situated when bringing liquor to these shores by boat becomes very lucrative.boardwalk empire season 1 dvd
The subtle Buscemi is a joy to watch in the role: He's believable as a former street scrapper turned well-dressed political fixer with a pragmatically brutal side. Yet Nucky has an air of melancholy about him, as if living like a king in the Ritz Hotel can't fill a hole in his soul. He's up to his elbows in dealmaking among bootleggers, gangsters and movers and shakers, but he sometimes gives off the air of a man whose mind is elsewhere (perhaps on the memory of his dead wife).boardwalk empire season 2 dvd
