The MBTA released raw data containing real-time locations and arrival predictions for select bus routes to third-party developers, who immediately came up with a dozen applications -- mostly iPhone and Android phone apps, but also websites, text-message services, and a blinking sign near an ice cream counter -- at no cost to the T itself.
