My Experience with Sony Hanycam HDR-TG3 on Final Cut Pro
I bought Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E years ago and it was one of the smallest HD cameras with weight 240g. I like the handy face detection and the full HD videos recording with 1920 x 1080, even though it was a little bit expensive at that time. It is slightly uncomfortable to hold with the sharp-cut edges after long-time holding. The CMOS sensor provides vivid images for me.
I am glad to know that it is the winner of Reevoo Customer Choice Awards 2009. I recently want to edit the Sony HDR-TG3 HD videos to Final Cut Pro, but FCP does not recognize the HD videos I recorded with 1920x1080i.
I searched and got more information about the Sony TG3. It can record and replay standard definition movies using MPEG-2 and the recorded videos come out as .mpg files. MPEG-2 is the compression system used by standard DVD. For HD videos, it uses an MPEG-4-based AVCHD compression system to write full-specification, 1920 x 1080i high-definition video clips to Sony's proprietary Memory Stick Pro Duo memory cards. With HD video recording, a 4GB card is not quite a big space now. However, the 4GB card is supplied in the box with the camera.
Final Cut Pro was said to support AVCHD .mts files, but I could not figure out the reason for my issue yet. I then find MTS to FCP converter and get .mov videos for editing on FCP. It works wonderfully for my Sony HDR-TG3 HD videos. I just use the USB extension cable to connect the HDR TG3 to PC, transfer the videos to Mac hard drive, and load the videos to the MTS to FCP converter, choose Common Video > MOV - QuickTime(*.mov) as output format for conversion. I can then load the videos to Final Cut Pro without problem.
Tips:
1. Sony HDR-TG3E is available in Europe, and the same module in other countries is Sony HDR-TG1. The Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac, working as MTS to FCP converter, deinterlaces the .mts videos and removes interlacing artifacts with great quality.
2. If you want to make the Sony HDR-TG3E (TG1) mts videos editable on Windows software like Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer, Pinnacle, you may use the windows version of Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter.
