H.264 vs Prores 422 - Why convert H.264 to ProRes codec?
Summary:Follow this article to know the differences between H.264 codec and ProRes 422 codec, and convert H.264 to Apple ProRes for FCP editing.
"I hope you all are having a nice evening. I have received H 264 and Pro Res 422 footage in a FC7 project which I am running on a Mac OS X. I am well aware that H264 is not an editing codec. I just want to make sure my workflow sounds good to you folks out there. I plan to transcode/convert the H264 to ProRes 422 footage in compressor and then reimport into my project with the sequence set at Prores. Is there anything that I am missing that I should be aware of? Your help is most appreciated. Thanks."
H.264 is really optimized to be a delivery codec while Prores is optimized to be an editing codec. That said, if you just need to do a simple edit and your Mac has the power to edit H.264 you can get away with it no problem, but if you plan to do a heavy edit with lots of transitions and effects and color grading you will be best served by Prores. FCP can get all weird with h264 in the TL. Better to convert H264 to ProRes if you are stuck in FCP.
I learned that converted the H.264 footage to ProRes helps to unlock some of the color information in the footage. It provides a considerable more amount of flexibility in the color correcting process.
Here you can follow the easy steps to convert H.264 codec to Apple ProRes codec.

2. Import the H.264 videos to the H.264 codec to Apple ProRes Converter.
3. Click format bar to choose the format for output, you can click and choose Final Cut Pro -> Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov), it's best for use in FCP.
4. You can click settings button to adjust the resolution, frame, etc.
5. Click convert button on the main interface to start converting H.264 codec to Apple ProRes.
