Sony has announced the NEX-VG30 interchangeable lens camcorder. With E-Mount lenses and a 16.1MP Exmor APS-C sized CMOS sensor, the NEX-VG30 will yield a beautiful, cinematic image with shallow depth of field and low noise characteristics. This newest iteration of the VG series will also offer videographers some welcome upgrades over NEX-VG20. Besids, the VG-30 records both AVCHD format high definition video and MPEG-2 format, which is very suitable for people who are looking for a capable Handycam.

Most users choose AVCHD format to get high quality videos and they may want to create and edit the footage on Mac to perfect the effect. Some users are unlucky that iMovie doesn't work well with the AVCHD files from Sony VG30. Though Apple says iMovie can natively ingest and edit Sony NEX-VG30 AVCHD, it needs many special conditions:

1)PowerMac G5 does not support the HD format.
2)iMovie '08 or later version which supports the HD format is necessary.
3)If both HD and STD format movies are recorded on the camcorder, HD movies are not recognized.
4)3D movies recorded with a 3D Handycam are not supported.
5)The AVCHD encoding method of the 2011 or later camcorder has been changed from the previous models. To import AVCHD movies using iMovie, update Mac OS to the latest version (Ver. 10.6.7 or later).
6)Refer to the Apple website for details on iMovie.
7)PMB and PlayMemories Home are not supported with Mac OS.
8)Please note that iMovie doesn't support 1080 60p/50p AVCHD, you'd better avoid recording format.

After trying to transcode some 1080 60p AVCHD .mts/.m2ts for testing many times, finally we got an easy way to transfer Sony VG30 Full HD recordings to Mac with iMovie software. You can convert NEX-VG30 footage to iMovie '11 friendly codec AIC, which is intermediate format that features high performance and quality, being less processor-intensive to work with on Mac OS X. And the MTS Converter for Mac OS X is the tool we applied.

Step 1: Install and run the tool as the best AVCHD to iMovie Converter. Transfer your VG30 footages to the converter. If you want, you can merge several AVCHD clips by ticking “Merge into one” box.

Step 2: Click "format" bar to choose the output format. Click and choose "iMovie and Final Cut Express--> Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC)(*.mov)" as the target format.

Step 3: You can click "settings" to customize the output parameters, adjust the resolution, bitrate as you want. Set video size as 1920*1080, video frame rate as 30fps (If the original recordings are 1080 50p, set 25fps) for smooth editing in iMovie.

Step 4: Click convert button to start transcoding 108060p AVCHD to AIC .mov for iMovie '11 losslessly on Mac OS X.

After the conversion, you can click “open” button to find the output file, then you can import Sony NEX-VG30 AVCHD files to iMovie '11 for editing without troubles.
