How to get Avid Media Composer working with Sony NEX-5R MTS footage?
Summary: In this article, you can learn the best way to convert Sony NEX-5R AVCHD MTS to Avid Media Composer 6.5/6.0/5.5/5/4 compatible DNxHD MOV format, and then you can import and edit them in Avid MC without rendering on Mac.
"I shot footage using the Sony NEX-5R. When I import the footage into Avid, I found the Media Composer 6.5 cannot handle the AVCHD files well, and some the footage looks washed out and the preview is loggy. Is there anyway to solve the problem? Thanks!"
Sony NEX-5R' Video is recorded in AVCHD format at up to 1080p60 quality, with 1080i60 and 1080p24 also supported. This is a step up from the video capabilities of the NEX-F3, which is limited to 1080i60 or 1080p24 capture. The quality is excellent - footage is sharp, colors are accurate, and motion is smooth. Autofocus works during recording just as it does for stills, and the even though the sound of the lens focusing can be heard on the soundtrack, it's not overbearing.
The Sony NEX-5R has much to recommend it as a top-flight large-sensor, interchangeable-lens camcorder and as a worth-the-upgrade successor to the Sony NEX 5N. It can shoot 1080 60p (50p for PAL)full HD resolution up to 240 fps in short bursts. While, the 1080 60p/50p AVCHD files are not friendly for Avid Media Composer(including Avid Media Composer 6.5), because when loading Sony NEX-5R AVCHD to Avid Media Composer, it always need a long for rendering. In fact, Avid's most friendly video format is DNxHD (*.mov). So, you'd better transcode Sony NEX-5R AVCHD footages to DNxHD MOV for Avid Media Composer 6.5 or Avid 6.0/5.5/5/4 first.
Although Avid MC has added some plug-ins, actually background converters for AVCHD editors, the importing process are unbelievably slow. To find a powerful and profession Mac AVCHD converter becomes more important. Here recommended the Pavtube AVCHD to Avid Converter for Mac. Its great performance makes it much faster to convert AVCHD footages to DNxHD (.mov) with original quality.
