After getting the 10.6-inch Microsoft Windows Surfce RT tablet, I found it supports to play 16:9 movies with some video players. As far as I know, there are three top movie players for the excellent device. They are the built-in Xbox Video, PressPlay Video and mobile.HD Video Player. In fact, they all supports a lot of HD video formats. But the tablet lacks a powerful video playback solution and didn’t include Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center, it may don't play 1080p/720p video smoothly though with the bellow three players.
Xbox Video
Launch the video player app and it immediately loads the Xbox Video store. This app can playback movies loaded on the internal storage or microSD card, but it’s primarily designed to be a video store. And like the Xbox dashboard it emulates, there are ads here too. After testing, I found it recognises MOV, MTS, WMV, MP4, AVI, ect formats.
PressPlay Video
Pressplay Video is an app for Windows 8 or Windows RT. Media Player providing the best experience for playing your local video files (including MKV and FLV). It also comes with an integrated explorer which displays the folders inside your libraries, removable devices, HomeGroup and media servers. While, some problems exist still. MKV playback has been pretty buggy. Conversion and seek times are slow, the frame rate of converted videos is jumpy, the audio is way out of sync, and more often than not the app will simply crash after fast forwarding for a couple seconds.
mobile.HD Video Player
You can play .mkv and other popular video format on Surface/RT/Windows 8 computer, but the lack of .dts audio support prevents this from being usable at the moment.
I have used the three apps, they can play some popular video files like AVI, MP4, MOV, WMV, but none of the video player can ensure playing all 1080p/720p movies files on Surface RT flawlessly especially the MKV container format. Many users want to know how to play any HD videos on Microsoft Surface RT smoothly with them. To enjoy movies on Surface RT without any playback problem, I found the top Video Converter for Windows RT. With it, I can re-encode any 1080p, 720p HD movie to a playable format like MP4 for transferring to RT for watching freely. The conversion is fast and it only needs 3 steps.
STEP 1: Go to install the HD Video to Surface RT Converter and launch it to add your video files to it.
STEP 2: Click the Format bar and select Windows > Microsoft Surface Windows RT H.264 Video (*.mp4) as export format.
STEP 3: Hit the Convert button to start the conversion.
Once this conversion ends, you can get the converted file by clicking “open” icon. Thus, you are able to watch 1080p/720p HD videos on Surface Windows RT with video players for enjoyment on the go.
Tips:
1. Tick off the “Merge into one” box to join multiple video files into one if necessary.
2. Tap the “Split” button to split a large video into several parts as you need.
3. When converting some VOB files, you’d better click the Settings icon to reset the video size as 720*480 or similar to the originals; or the output video will look blocky.
4. To get more info of this smart Video Converter for Microsoft Surface tablet, please go to Brorsoft Video Converter.
