1. What’s an AVCHD file?
AVCHD stands for "Advanced Video Codec High Definition", the format was jointly established by both Panasonic and Sony in 2006. The "AVCHD" is a brand new high definition (HD) digital video camera recorder format recording 1080i*1 and 720p*2 signals onto certain media by using highly efficient codec technologies. The "AVCHD" is jointly established by Panasonic, the brand name for which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is known and Sony Corporation.
AVCHD video is recorded using the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression codec. In AVCHD compression, audio is stored in a compressed form (Dolby AC-3). What makes AVCHD a unique and advanced compression is that it includes features to improve media presentation such as: menu navigation, slide shows and subtitles?
AVCHD specification allows using several kinds of recording media, in particular recordable DVD discs, memory cards, non-removable solid-state memory(SD/SDHC cards or "Memory Stick" cards) and hard disk drives(HDD-based AVCHD). AVCHD camcorders do not use magnetic tape.
AVCCAM is the name of Panasonic Broadcast’s professional video lineup employing the AVCHD codec. Before Panasonic adopted this name, it used to describe its professional AVCHD-based models as "AVCHD with professional features".
AVCHD Lite is a subset of AVCHD format, which identifies devices that are capable of 720p recording only. The name was used first in marketing literature for the Panasonic DMC-ZS3/DMC-FT1/DMC-TZ7 digital cameras, announced in January 2009.
2. How to play AVCHD files on Mac
Recorded AVCHD video can be played back in variety of ways: on a computer, playing from the camcorder connected via USB as an external storage device or playing directly from recorded media using a DVD drive or a memory card reader, also the file can be transferred to a computer via USB from the camcorder and played directly from the computer's internal hard drive, or an attached external hard drive on the computer's monitor or an attached HDTV.
