Edit VIXIA HF M41/M400/M500 MTS in Avid MC on Mac 10.8

Summary: This tutorial mainly shows you how to import and edit Canon VIXIA HF M41/M400/M500 AVCHD footage in Avid Media Composer smoothly under Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 by transcoding/converting Canon VIXIA HF .mts footage to DNxHD MOV for Avid MC.

Canon VIXIA series (HF M41/M400/M500) camcorders adapted Canon's leading imaging technologies, including a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Lens and new HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor, deliver high video resolution, outstanding low-light performance, and a wide dynamic range. Sophisticated features such as Smart Auto "read" the visual components of the scene you're shooting and choose the best settings. Touch & Track allows you to achieve sharp focus and precise exposure for any subject, simply by touching the 3.0" Touch Panel LCD. New features such as Cinema-Look Filters, Story Creator, and Touch Decoration provide an easy and fun way to shoot great video and add creative flair.

Some users have got problems when they import Canon VIXIA HF M41/M400/M500 projects to Avid media composer for editing. "I shot footage using the Canon VIXIA HF M41. When I import the footage into Avid, I found the Media Composer 6.5 cannot handle the AVCHD files well, and some the footage looks washed out and the preview is loggy. Is there anyway to solve the problem? Thanks!"

As the Avid can’t import Canon VIXIA HF M41/M400/M500 recorded AVCHD video, the codec is not friendly to AMC for editing, on Avid official website, it recommends DNxHD codec for editing, and DNxHD codec is the best choice. So if you want to edit your Canon VIXIA HF M41/M400/M500 MTS in Avid smoothly, you should transcode MTS format to DNXHD codec, which is best supported by Avid Media Composer.
