Although it initially looked like TaylorMade had made a major fumble in naming the RocketBallz line – the products appear to be really catching on with the majority of golfers. While the name of the line results in plenty of chuckles – the performance of the line appears to be no joke.My initial impression while unboxing of the irons was good.Callaway RAZR X BLACK Driver I really like the dark gray steel, the sole of the irons have a nice shine, the carbon accents are nice, and the quality feels solid. While I’d personally prefer something other than neon green accents – the accents do have a nice flow from the cavity to the highlights on the grips. The neon green is subdued enough that it’s really not noticeable through regular play with the clubs. While I wasn’t fully blown away by the look of the clubs, they did grow on me after a couple of rounds. At this point I’m really content with the overall look of the clubs and they certainly have a nice feel.As I pulled the clubs out of the box the irons certainly felt more solid than my normal irons. Callaway RAZR Fit Driver Since I’ve walked every round with these clubs – I can say that the carry weight does not seem any heavier than normal while the swing weight feels heavier while playing. Before these irons – most of my rounds have been with Callaway X-22s and the ball flight of the RBZs was significantly higher than what I’m used to. I haven’t lost any distance with the high ball flight and the clubs have all been true to my normal distances. The ball feels great coming off the face of the club – a very smooth and solid feel with a nice sound.
Key to the distance performance of RocketBallz irons is a large, thin clubface that’s strong and stiff at the perimeter and thin at the inner edge, allowing the face to flex freely like a trampoline. No part of the clubhead structure inhibits or restricts the flexion of the face. RocketBallz also incorporate TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone clubface technology, which expands the portion of the face that delivers high ball speed, promoting more distance on off-center hits.Every RBZ iron head, from the 3- to the lob wedge, is uniquely constructed and features a progressive length and spec package, which has been carefully coordinated to ensure proper trajectory and distance gaps throughout the set.RocketBallz 3- through 5-irons feature a new, hollow clubhead construction akin to that of the company’s industry leading line of metalwoods. ping i20 driver This hollow head construction allows the company’s engineers to create the clubface (455 carpenter’s steel in the 3- through 5), and allows for a lower and centered CG location which ensures pure contact on the face when hitting off turf, promoting maximum energy transfer at impact.Lowering the CG also allowed TaylorMade engineers to strengthen the loft to promote a more penetrating flight. This improved CG location is made possible in the 3- to 6-irons by thinning areas of the sole, top-line and back wall, then repositioning the saved weight strategically to the back wall and heel to shift the CG lower and more toward the center.
