Characters struggle with temptation on 'Boardwalk Empire,' but temptation usually wins. Unlike 'The Sopranos,' which concerned a man who was born into a certain way of life, the people who populate this show have had to scrap for everything they have. Nothing was handed to them. Even though America is booming and opportunities are there for the taking, they always want more. They are convinced that more wealth, status, prestige, money or territory will bring them the satisfaction and contentment they crave.boardwalk
But success and attainment often bring feelings of frustration, if not revulsion. And even Agent Van Alden's self-flagellation can't destroy his desires completely.boardwalk empire
Those are certainly interesting themes -- the intersections of desire, temptation, greed and self-delusion. And they seem to be very American themes as well -- the unquenchable desire to have it all and the equally strong desire to punish oneself for wanting any of it (these ideas often course through 'Mad Men' as well -- the product of another former 'Sopranos' writer).boardwalk empire season
