Nyonya jewellery gets updated with a touch of modernity. THE old charm of Nyonya jewellery is preserved while a touch of modernity is added, thanks to the ingenuity of Penang jeweller Amee Philips. Jade Jewelry She calls it “Nyonya fusion jewellery” and says that “the jewellery can work its charm when paired with a cheongsam or baju kebaya”. Jade Necklaces
Philips created two stunning sets of Nyonya fusion jewellery for the George Town Festival. The first is “Mother And Children” (Ibu Anak-Anak), a Nyonya-Baba style necklace set in 18K white gold with a large round jadeite centrepiece (called ibu or mother) with five smaller round jadeite pieces (representing her children). Jade Rings The jadeite pieces are further adorned with tulips. “Jadeite symbolises never-ending. The purpose of the design is to bless the family with many offsprings and have never-ending prosperity.” Jade Bangle The jadeite centrepiece can be removed and worn separately as a pendant with Philips’ patented V-clip. The jadeite centrepiece and the matching earrings can also be used as a keronsang for the kebaya.
