Scripting Season Two: A Clash of Kings
Back in January,game of thrones dvd Fire and Blood broke down A Clash of Kings into bite-sized chapter summaries. He then laid those out into a speculative 12 episode season. We know now, of course, that season two will be only 10 episodes. But FaB’s breakdown is still helpful, so I decided to repost it to get the conversation started on what season two might look like. Eventually, we’ll speculate on specific episodes, but for now, let’s take a look at what writers/producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working with for the whole of season two.
Spoilers! At the risk of stating the obvious, this post will contain spoilers for A Clash of Kings and, by extension, the second season of Game of Thrones box set. You’ve been warned!
A Clash of Kings, despite having only 70 chapters to A Game of Thrones‘ 73, is still a longer book, clocking in at 969 pages (US MMPB) to AGoT’s 807. This means David & Dan have some work to do to fit it into 10 episodes. Another challenge: the story lines are very imbalanced. For example, Tyrion has 15 chapters while Dany has only 5. And characters such as Robb and Jaime have hardly any screen time at all.
We know that they plan to rectify this latter issue by showing us Robb’s exploits in the West as opposed to the second hand reports we received in the books. They’ve also said they will be moving some storylines from the third book up into the second season, leaving me and others to speculate if that means we might see Jaime released from captivity this season.
Of course, these new scenes means others have to be cut. Game of Thrones Season 1 dvdIt seems the Tullys have received the axe once again. What other characters or storylines might be trimmed to make way for new material? Or just to streamline this story into ten 55-minute episodes (give or take a few minutes)?
