If you put a log on the ground and asked someone to take out a chunk of wood from the log they would most likely swing() Golf Clubs the ax into the log at an angle and create sliced out section from the log. However, if you asked that same person to drive a spike into the end of the log with a sledge hammer they would use more of a level approach with a less descending strike and more of an approach from behind the spike level with the head of the spike vs. angular.
