How to set up Home Sharing and AirPlay for Apple TV video Streaming
There are 2 ways that you can stream videos and photos to HDTV screen via Apple TV, Home Sharing and AirPlay.
Home Sharing
Home Sharing lets you share your iTunes libraries between computers and iOS devices (iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, Apple TV 2nd or later) on your home network. Now that your Apple TV is connected to HDTV, you can watch movies through Apple TV from your local computer hard drive.
What you need: Windows/Mac computer with iTunes 10.2 later, Apple TV, home network, HDTV

AirPlay
With AirPlay, you can wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to Apple TV (2nd generation) and stream music to AirPlay speakers or receivers, including AirPort Express. You can also wirelessly stream videos and music from your computer to Apple TV (2nd generation) and stream music to AirPlay speakers or receivers, including AirPort Express.
What you need: iPad/iPhone, Apple TV, Wi-Fi network, HDTV
