How do kill the boring time during travel? Read a book? Or do something different-- Like surfing on the Internet through iPad or a smartphone? That's nice, but I have a brilliant idea with the tablet: watching DVD movies on iPad (including iPad 2 & iPad 3). Movies always help you pass the time easier. To help those who wanna get movies off DVD onto iPad for a journey, Below I will throw a quick tutorial up, guaranteed to show you a fast tutorial for ripping DVD to iPad videos.

In order to play DVD movies on iPad, we'll need to get some help from third-party software to convert DVD's to iPad compatible video formats (e.g. h.264 mp4). There are many programs out there that allow you to make copies of your DVDs and let you watch them the way you want to view them. Most of you are likely familiar with the excellent Handbrake for ripping standard Def DVDs, however, it cannot decrypt the commercial DVD discs (ie: Disney and other animated movies ) the way it can with regular DVDs. So you'll need to add an intermediate step.

If you're looking for ease of use, and don't mind spending $35 (they currently have a sale), I've had success using Pavtube's DVD Ripper to convert and rip DVD's yet ISO image files to iPad playable videos. I’ve found the quality to be excellent, and see no difference when compared to playing the discs themselves. The audio/video synchronization is very good, the size of the subtitles too. The time it takes to convert in this software is almost half that in other. Just free download it and follow the steps below to copy DVD movies to iPad.

2. Choose the output video format

By clicking "Format" bar, you can easily find the optimized video profiles for iPad / iPad 2 / iPad 3 under "iPad" category. To play DVD on iPad, 720*480 video size is enough due to the dvd movies' native resolution. So here I recommend you "iPad 3 (New iPad) HD Video(*.mp4)" as output.

Tips -

a. You can click "settings" button to set the video/audio parameters such as adjust video and audio birate, resolution, frame rate etc. The only thing to keep in mind is that the file size is based more on bitrate than resolution which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible quality loss.

b. If you to watch DVD movies on iPad with subtitles, you can select the subtitle language you like from "Subtitles" options. Meanwhile, you are able to choose your master language of audio track from "Audio" option.

3. Start DVD to iPad conversion

After all the above settings, simply click "Start" button to start converting DVD to iPad video. Just wait for the converting process to be done. After that, find the converted videos in your output folder and transfer them to your iTunes library and sync your iPad. In this way, you can play DVD movies on iPad and enjoy them on the go when traveling.
