Ping is known for producing revolutionary golf clubs. Its founder, Karsten Solheim, was born in Norway and didn't pickup a golf club until he was 42 years old. Founded by engineer Karsten Solheim, the company has been at the forefront of golf innovation since the development of the Ping putter in the late 1950s. Karsten Solheim remained at the helm of his company until the mid 1990s, when he turned the reins over to his youngest son, John. John Solheim has been a lifelong employee of Ping. When Karsten passed away in 2000, John formally took over as chairman and CEO. The company remains in family hands through 2010, with Karsten's grandson also on the payroll.
Ping innovations like perimeter weighting, heat-treated clubheads and color coding of lie and loft are now considered the standard and used by manufacturers throughout the golf industry.
