Post subject: Best way to get MP4/MPEG4 files into Final Cut Pro or FCE
"I've been searching for a solution but everything I've found relating to this doesn't work for me. I have an MP4 (with AVC Coding, 640 x 360, Millions AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz) that I need to edit in FCP 7.0.3. I've tried the standard solution of MPEG Streamclip with no luck. When I try to export as ProRes with current settings, I get a message that says "Error: can't prepare the movie." I've tried several different codecs to no avail (Intermediate, DV NTSC, etc.) I also tried the QT 7 Pro export (with various codecs) and I end up with audio but the video is simply a white screen. Any ideas on any other ways to get this converted to an editable format? Thanks!-from http://forums.creativecow.net

Does the FCP V7 can support all the MP4 files? In fact, not all the MP4 clips can be recognized by Final Cut Pro or FCE, even the latest FCP 7. Compared with the previous versions of Final Cut Pro, the FCP 7 has better compatibility with HD, DV or camcorder video shootings and Apple devices like iPad, iPhone, ATV, etc. Because the MP4 file can be associated with different codecs like MPEG4, AVC, etc.

In the case, convert your handy mp4 file to Final Cut Pro accepted file formats like MOV, DV can be a way out. No matter where the MP4 files are from, the software can assist you. The source MP4 files can be from Kodak video, Sony Bloggie Touch, Flip camera video, etc. Have to mention, you don't need to fight against the MPEG4 codec.
