How to copy Blu-ray movies to Synology DS411slim NAS Server
If you want a small but feature-packed NAS for home media sharing, the Synology DS411slim is a great choice. DiskStation DS411slim is designed to provide users with a compact yet feature laden solution for easy file sharing and backup. Snap-in 2.5"hard drives design brings low power consumption, quiet operation, reliability and easy disk replacement in a compact size. The operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager, delivers rich features for multimedia enjoyments, Internet sharing, worry-free data protection and energy-saving options. After setting up the DS411slim, you can copy DVD and Blu-ray movies to the NAS server for accessing/streaming.
- Rip Blu-ray with best possible quality (1080p) for HD players
When a Synology DS411slim serves as DLNA/UPnP Media Server, it pairs up perfectly with Sony PS3, Xbox 360 and other DLNA/UPnP compliant players. Compatible file types are listed below.
To keep original Blu-ray video streams without changing anything, the best option is ripping Blu-ray to M2TS streams or MKV file. A 100megabit connection would let you to stream the 1080p Blu-ray contents to a networked Blu-ray Disc player (e.g. OPPO BDP-95, PS3) or Networked Media Tank (e.g. Popcorn Hour A-210).
It is recommended to have the high-definition Blu-ray contents converted and compressed if the Blu-ray is ripped for streaming to Xbox 360, as the device refuses to play .m2ts. But you can get it work by converting Blu-ray to Xbox 360 supported file types (e.g. WMV, MP4, MOV, M4V). Click the below link for a full guide: Rip a Blu-ray to NAS for streaming to Xbox 360.
Convert a Blu-ray movie to Synology NAS for streaming to iPad/iPhone/Android phones (Motorola Droid 3, Samsung Infuse 4G, etc).
- Rip Blu-ray to smaller file size and lower quality for portable devices
When a Synology DS411slim is used as iTunes Server, it works with Apple devices like Mac, iPad and iPhone and is compatible with corresponding media formats:
Supported Audio Format: MP3, M4A, M4P, WAV, AIF
Supported Video Format: M4V, MOV, MP4
Supported Playlist Format: M3U, WPL
Now that most mobile devices accept 720p HD video as best playable quality, it is reasonable to shrink Blu-ray contents to 720p .mp4. H.264 codec is preferred for video streaming over the Internet as it achievies very high data compression while maintaining good video quality at bit rates that are substantially lower (e.g., half or less) than what previous standards would need.
Step 1: Click the Blu-ray disc icon, or the Blu-ray folder icon at the top left corner of the main interface to load Blu-ray movie files.
Step 2: Click on the pull down menu of "Subtitle" and "Audio" respectively to select your needed languages as output subs and sound track.
Step 3: Click on the dropdown list of "Format" and select "iPad HD Video(*.mp4)" as output format.
Step 4: Click "Convert" button to convert Blu-ray to 720p MP4 format.
After conversion the Blu-ray movie can be compressed to 2.5GB-4GB, which is just right for streaming to iPad, iPhone, Android phones (e.g. the latest released Droid 3), etc.
