'Take Shelter': Family man braces for worst — 3 1/2 stars
The story is simple. Curtis lives in a small Ohio town with his wife, Hannah, played by the superb Jessica Chastain ("The Help," "The Tree of Life").boardwalk empire box set Their preteen daughter (Tova Stewart), who is deaf, requires an operation they're struggling to afford. Curtis supervises a small crew, including his friend Dewart (Shea Whigham), out at the local sand-mining company. Life is not plush or even easy, but Curtis, as Dewart observes early on, has a good life. Which, as he says, is "the best compliment you can give a man."boardwalk empire dvd
"Take Shelter" takes that good life and throws wrenches into its inner workings. Strange sights and dreams begin to afflict Curtis, beginning with goopy motor-oil-colored raindrops from the sky. He dreams of his dog attacking him, of shadowy demons at the windows. When he was 10, his mother (Kathy Baker) was diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic. We see what Curtis and no one else witnesses — skies ready-made for four apocalyptic horsemen, among other things. He channels his ratcheting fear into a backyard project adding onto his tornado shelter. Throughout, "Take Shelter" stays very close to Shannon's face. Yet the film, slim in narrative structure and perhaps a tad staid in its rhythm, allows for gratifying interaction with Chastain, who has a way of making goodness on screen as compelling as overt fireworks.
