Here at work we are evaluating small HD cameras for some specialized shooting applications. We got a demo of the Panasonic HSC1U for about a week and were pleasantly surprised by its performance for our application. But the real problem comes when trying to edit the footage which is AVCHD files with .mts extension on Avid Media Composer.
As you can check from Avid official website the list of supported file formats by Avid Media Composer, unfortunately mts/m2ts files are not listed. Therefore, as for those AVCHD camcorder users, if you want to edit your MTS/M2TS files in Avid, it is necessary to convert/shrink MTS/M2TS to Avid compliant video formats.
Avid Supported File Import Formats
Stills: All common graphic file formats including .TGA, .TIF, .PSD, .G, .DKO, .VPB
Clips (optional): QuickTime movie files, .DV, .TNF, .AVI, .MP2 + .WAV, and sequential .TGA or .TIF files
So how do we exactly convert AVCHD MTS/M2TS to Avid Media Composer? Basically we use MTS/M2TS converter to rewrap the avchd files to .mov so they can be accessed as h.264 .mov files via Avid Media Composer. It can be quick, quality lossless if you choose the right converter tool, for example Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter. More than just a simple converter, this great tool provided by Aunsoft also works as a marvelous MTS/M2TS joiner enabling us to merge/combine/join multiple mts/m2ts files to one single output.
