Smart Media cards are very similar to flash drives. You are able to insert the card into your USB port, save files to the card, and insert the card into another computer's USB port to retrieve the files. They can be used to store data for portable electronics such as digital cameras. Due to the way that flash memory stores data it is possible to recover files on the card that were lost. Missing files can even be restored if you accidentally deleted them or formatted them. To recover data on a Smart Media card you need to use a third party recovery utility.
Firstly and most importantly, you should immediately stop saving new files to the Smart Media card or deleting old ones when you realize you need to recover missing data. If you continue using the card the memory location that stored the lost data may be overwritten and the data will be gone forever.
Secondly, Download and install a recovery program on your computer and connect the card to your computer. Remove the Smart Media card from the device it's currently installed in. Plug the card into the Smart Media port on your computer's card reader. If your computer does not have a built-in card reader you can acquire an external card reading unit from computer parts websites or electronics stores. Connect the card reading unit to one of your computer's USB ports. Plug the Smart Media card into the corresponding port on the card reading unit.
Thirdly, close down the Auto Play window that appears on the screen and open the data recovery program. Depending on the specific data recovery program you install you may need to choose different menu options. Here let’s take a professional data recovery program-wGXe data recovery for example. It only takes a few steps to recover the data.
Choose a recovery option on the program's main interface, such as delete recovery, and then select the Smart Media card to recover. Wait for the program to finish scanning for lost data. After the scanning process is finished, all the lost files will be listed. Just click the check box next to the specific files you want to recover on the Smart Media card. Choose the location on the Smart Media card or your computer's hard drive where you want the recovered data to be saved. Click "recover" to recover the files.
