Nikon uses its unique file format which is known as Nikon Electronic Format (NEF). It is also referred as a proprietary format. These sometimes are shown as NEF (RAW). Any manufacturer can add proprietary tags just like Nikon did. NEF files are compliant with the Tiff 6.0 specifications. Nikon uses this NEF file format that is the closest thing to "raw" data which the digital camera saves and can be thought of as like a TIFF or JPG file, NEF files store the data far closer to the way it is sampled by the CCD (Charged Couple Devices). If by any means the NEF files get corrupted, deleted, destroyed or formatted then you will be unable to see those pictures again.
